RAMMB UPDATE: Caltrans has disclosed the name of the Fire Marshal who conducted a walk-through of the ROW and will be filing a report. They have also provided the location of work done by the landscaping crew, but that not has been verified by any members of the public. Here is my response to Caltrans. The original Caltrans email is below my response.

Hi Jeneane, Thanks for keeping the line of communication open by providing this information. I look forward to seeing the Fire Marshal’s report. Regarding the landscaping crew, there must be a miscommunication somewhere. There is no section of the ROW where Cedar intersects Sunshine Valley Rd. There is no intersection of Cedar St. and Sunshine Valley Road anywhere. The only place where Cedar Street crosses into the ROW is at its northern terminus at Linda Vista Street, which is far from Sunshine Valley Rd. It may be the crew has confused Sunshine Valley Road with its terminus at George Street. Even if that is the case, I drive that route every day and see no landscaping crews or any evidence of brush clearing. Moreover, via the Nextdoor APP, I had the entire neighborhood looking for the crew with negative results. Can you provide a better location so that we can all see the work done? Even better, would you happen to have any before-and-after photos you can provide?

Also outstanding is an answer to my question about whether Caltrans plans to apply for Coastal Commission and CEQA permit waivers to perform fire mitigation on the ROW. Such an application would go a long way in building goodwill with the community.

Hi Larry,

I gathered some more of the information that you had asked for. First, the name of the Cal Fire contact who visited the site on March 3 is April Horvatits, Deputy State Fire Marshal III Specialist – Fire and Life Safety Division. We can share the Fire Marshall’s report after the team has had a chance to review it. Second, landscaping work was performed in the vicinity of Cedar Street and Sunshine Valley Rd on April 7 and 8. We are awaiting availability from the landscaping vendor for subsequent work dates, and they will take place intermittently throughout the spring.

Best regards,

Jeneane Crawford
