Caltrans continues to stall on a full fire mitigation of the ROW. Here is where we are now.

Under pressure from elected officials and unflattering news coverage in May, Caltrans took the following actions:

  1. Caltrans promised to work with Cal Fire to produce a comprehensive mitigation plan for the right-of-way. But we have seen no progress.
  2. Caltrans brought in contractors to cut and bulldoze undergrowth within 30 feet of existing roads in the community. But piles of debris and logs from the work have not been cleared.
  3. Caltrans has mitigated the risk to Caltrans-owned rental properties within the right-of-way. But the danger to private homes adjacent to the right of way remains unaddressed.
  4. Caltrans has made multiple written assurances that documents requested under the California Public Records Act would be forthcoming. Nine months after the initial requests, they have yet to provide any documents. In light of this disappointing progress, RAMMB will be stepping up our efforts to get Caltrans to do the right thing.
