RAMMB Update:

We sent an email to San Mateo County Supervisor Mueller. We know he is aware of our efforts, but we want him to play an active role in helping us get Caltrans to mitigate the Very High Fire Hazard posed by the ROW: Caltrans Devil’s Slide Right of Way (ROW)

Dear Supervisor Mueller,

I am the Chair of RAMMB (Red Alert Montara, Moss Beach), a group formed to ensure that Caltrans takes responsibility for mitigating the very high fire hazard posed by the abandoned, non-maintained ROW that intrudes into Montara and Moss Beach neighborhoods. The ROW was not a fire hazard before Caltrans acquired it by eminent domain. It could easily be the spark that ignites the midcoast in a Palisades-like fire. Notably, much of the MWSD infrastructure would be destroyed in such a fire, as well as at least 2400 homes. Currently, 95 of your constituents have joined the Nextdoor RAMMB group page.

We have made significant progress. Caltrans has informed RAMMB that it will begin clearing flammable fuel from the ground in the first week of April and formulate a plan for removing appropriate trees after ground clearance. CalFire will also be involved in this plan. RAMMB believes that it is essential that the County play an active role in the project and help make it transparent to all stakeholders, and we hope that you, as our District Supervisor, lead that effort.

RAMMB would like to meet with you to present a short slide show and discuss this issue further. Please let me know when that can be accomplished.

Larry De Young, Ph.D.
