What is our Concern in Montara, Moss Beach?

We consider the Caltrans Right-of-Way a Red Alert That Must be addressed

RAMMB aims to ensure that the extreme fire hazard posed by the Caltrans Devil’s Slide bypass right of way (ROW) is mitigated immediately.

What is Red Alert Montara, Moss Beach (RAMMB)?

Red Alert Montara, Moss Beach is a grassroots group determined to reduce wildfire risk in our local area of San Mateo County.

How can I get involved with RAMMB?

You can join our Nextdoor group, attend local events, and, most importantly, contact our local representatives.

What Is the CalTrans ROW?

The Caltrans Devil’s Slide Bypass Right of Way (ROW) was created by eminent domain (before the Tom Lantos Tunnel project was approved). The ROW has been neglected and is now a serious fire hazard. See video below for a drone’s eye view.

Why is Management of the Caltrans ROW so important for Montara and Moss Beach?

Our region is at risk for wildfires, and we need to ensure appropriate preventative measures are being put in place.

Caltrans Right of Way

The Caltrans Devil’s Slide Bypass Right-of-Way extends from the north end of Montara through to Moss Beach, as outlined above. It is adjacent to multiple residences, making it impossible to create an appropriate buffer from wild land fire.

Montara through history

The Right of Way was not an invasive woodland until Caltrans took it over.

Cal Fire recommends 100 feet of defensive space.

CALFIRE Fire Risk

CALFIRE’s Fire Hazard Severity Map indicates our area is at High Risk of fire, including 90% of the Caltrans ROW. Residents along the Right of Way are unable to create an appropriate defensible space.

MWSD Fire Risk

Critical current and potential future Montara Water and Sanitary District infrastructure could be destroyed.
